Parent Resources
Benefits of Reading Aloud with Children:
- Children build memory and listening skills.
- Builds a lifelong interest in reading.
- Helps with language and speech development.
- Children whose parents read to them tend to become better readers and perform better in school.
- Reading to toddlers helps prepare them for school, during which they will need to listen to what is being said to them (as they do while being read to).
- Reading to older children helps them understand grammar and correct sentence structure and models what “good reading sounds like”.
- Reading time can be a bonding time providing opportunity for one-to-one communication and attention to that child.
- Provides opportunity to learn how to pronounce new words.
- Assists children in learning how to express themselves clearly and confidently.
- When read to, children are exposed to new situations, learning appropriate behavior, making them more prepared to encounter these situations in life. They learn positive behavior patterns and social values.
- Children develop curiosity, creativity and imagination.
- When read to, children are able to experience the rhythm and melody of language, even if they do not understand the printed word.
- Being read to builds children’s attention span.
- Children learn information about the world around them (content knowledge).
- Children develop individual interest in special subjects like dogs, dinosaurs or biographies.
- Parents share with their children things they remember as being fun, so they will be more likely to read to their children.
- Children learn the joy of reading!
